Shiatsu What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a form of natural healing massage with its roots in ancient Chinese medicine. Shiatsu means finger pressure in Japanese. The principles are similar to accupuncture using pressure (rather than needles) to help balance, tonify, sedate or stimulate the body's energy lines (meridians) & pressure points. | |
| Shiatsu works both on a physical level with massage, pressure and stretching of limbs; and energetically to restore and unblock the body's own healing energy (called ki or prana in oriental tradition).
A variety of techniques will be used which may include pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows and feet; gentle holding or more dynamic rotation and stretching of limbs. |
| | Shitsu is normally given on a padded mat at floor level, or sometimes sitting on a chair or on a massage table.
Your practitioner may offer some advice concerning posture, breathing and nutrition and even demonstrate excercises to be practiced at home. |
